English Language and Literature, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
Advance to Candidacy: In addition to the course requirements below, students must pass a qualifying examination in their areas of specialization and demonstrate, through examination or coursework, evidence of competence in a second language related to their areas of specialization. During the semester students take their qualifying exam, they must enroll in a section of ENGL898 Pre-Candidacy Research with their advisor to get guidance in preparing for the exam.
Post-Candidacy: Students must complete at least 12 credits of ENGL899 Doctoral Dissertation Research as well as successfully defend and submit an original dissertation.
Language Literacy: All students are required to have a reading knowledge of one language other than English.
Course Requirements for Students Entering without a Master's Degree
A minimum of 45 credits of coursework is required for students entering the doctoral program without an M.A. degree.
